The village

I

A hill town in Molise

Guardiaregia sits at about 730 metres in the Province of Campobasso, in Molise. Its residents are the guardioli. Civil records for the town begin in 1809, and parish registers reach back further, which is why so many families in North Jersey can still trace a surname to a single street in the village.

In the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries a large share of the town emigrated. Many guardioli crossed to North Jersey and settled in Palisades Park, Fort Lee and the Bergen County corridor within sight of Manhattan — near work, near each other, and near the churches and clubs that kept the village connected across an ocean.

The families who arrived brought trades with them: masonry, plumbing, carpentry, ironwork. Those trades built much of the housing stock that still stands in northeastern Bergen County, and they are the direct ancestor of the work Alliotts does today.

The Galeazza family — now Alliotts

Galeazza is one of the documented surnames of Guardiaregia. In America the spelling was Americanized to Alliotts — the same family, a new spelling, as happened to many guardioli names at the port and in the parish books of North Jersey.

What did not change was the work. Four generations later the family still builds, and still holds what it builds, in the same handful of Bergen County boroughs where the first guardioli settled.

  1. 1903

Trades in the New York metro area

The family's work in the building trades in the New York metropolitan area dates to 1903, in the same emigration that carried guardioli families from Molise to North Jersey.

  2. 1920

    Alliotts Plumbing

Alliotts Plumbing is established, the first business to carry the Americanized spelling of the Guardiaregia surname Galeazza.

  3. 1980

    Alliotts Construction Corp.

General contracting and construction management, building custom homes and multifamily work across northeastern Bergen County.

  4. Today

    Alliotts Enterprises

Developer, owner and manager of apartment communities and industrial space in Bergen County — four generations on from the first crossing.
